Mike Tyson Personal Information

Mike Tyson is a former  professional boxer from the United States who competed from 1985 until 2005. Tyson is regarded as one of the all-time best heavyweight boxers. From 1987 through 1990, he was the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Tyson was undefeated in his first 19 professional fights, with 12 of them coming in the first round. Tyson holds the record for being the youngest heavyweight champion in history, having won his first title at the age of 20 years, four months, and 22 days.

Mike Tyson was the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles at the same time, and the only heavyweight to unify all three titles in the same fight. Tyson became the lineal champion the following year when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the opening round in 91 seconds. In one of the biggest surprises in boxing history, Tyson was knocked out by underdog Buster Douglas in 1990.

Tyson was recognized for his frightening and violent boxing technique, as well as his contentious behavior both inside and beyond the ring. He was placed 16th on The Ring magazine’s list of the 100 best punchers of all time, and first on ESPN’s list of “The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History,” with an 88 percent knockout-to-win percentage.

Mike Tyson Early Life

On June 30, 1966, Michael Gerard Tyson was born in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. Rodney, his older brother, died of a heart attack at the age of 24 in February 1990, and Denise, his older sister, died of a heart attack at the age of 24. On his birth certificate, Tyson’s biological father is listed as “Purcell Tyson,” although Tyson grew up knowing Jimmy Kirkpatrick as his father.

Kirkpatrick married and had a son, Jimmie Lee Kirkpatrick, Tyson’s half-brother, who helped integrate Charlotte high school football in 1965. Jimmy Kirkpatrick left his family and came to Brooklyn in 1959, where he met Lorna Mae Tyson, Tyson’s mother.

The family lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant until Tyson was ten years old, when financial constraints forced them to relocate to Brownsville. Tyson’s mother died six years later, leaving him in the care of Cus D’Amato, a boxing manager and trainer who would later become his legal guardian.

Mike Tyson later said, “I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing something: she only knew me as being a wild kid running the streets, coming home with new clothes that she knew I didn’t pay for. I never got a chance to talk to her or know about her. Professionally, it has no effect, but it’s crushing emotionally and personally.”

Tyson was captured on multiple occasions committing minor offenses and fighting others who mocked his high-pitched voice and lisp. He had been arrested 38 times by the age of 13. He ended up at Johnstown, New York’s Tryon School for Boys. Bobby Stewart, a juvenile detention facility counselor and former boxer, spotted Tyson’s budding boxing talent there. Stewart thought Tyson was a great boxer and spent a few months training him before introducing him to Cus D’Amato.

Tyson was a junior when he dropped out of high school. In 1989, Central State University bestowed upon him an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. Teddy Atlas occasionally assisted Kevin Rooney in training Tyson, but Atlas was fired by D’Amato when Tyson was 15 years old.

Mike Tyson Boxing Career

Mike Tyson made his professional debut as an 18-year-old in Albany, New York, on March 6, 1985. He TKO’d Hector Mercedes in the first round. In his debut year as a professional, he had 15 fights. Tyson won 26 of his first 28 fights by KO or TKO, with 16 of them coming in the first round.

Mike Tyson’s first nationally televised fight came against journeyman heavyweight Jesse Ferguson on February 16, 1986, at Houston Field House in Troy, New York, and was shown on ABC Sports. Ferguson was knocked out in the fifth round with a Tyson punch that shattered his nose.

Mike Tyson met former world title contender Marvis Frazier in Glens Falls, New York, on another ABC Sports telecast in July, after scoring six consecutive knockout victories. Tyson easily won by charging at Frazier at the start of the fight and hitting him with an uppercut that knocked him out thirty seconds later.

Tyson’s first title fight was against Trevor Berbick for the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight championship on November 22, 1986. Tyson won the championship by TKO in the second round, making him the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the age of 20 years and 4 months. After defeating James Smith and Tony Tucker in 1987, he added the WBA and IBF championships to his collection.

Tyson’s explosive punching technique was largely due to his stooping shortly before delivering a hook or an uppercut, which allowed his legs to’spring’ into the punch, adding force. A right hook to his opponent’s body followed by a right uppercut to his opponent’s chin was one of his defining moves. This combo brought down Lorenzo Boyd, Jesse Ferguson, and José Ribalta.

Mike Tyson’s World Tour

Mike Tyson declared that he will be conducting a series of exhibition bouts called Tyson’s World Tour to help pay off his debts. Tyson fought for the first time in 2006 in Youngstown, Ohio, in a four-round exhibition against journeyman heavyweight Corey Sanders. Tyson, who was 5 ft 10.5 in and weighed 216 pounds without headgear, was in good form but far from his prime when he faced Sanders, who stood 6 ft 6 in and wore headgear. Tyson appeared to be “holding back” in the display in order to keep the “show” from ending too soon.

The money I make isn’t going to help my bills from a tremendous standpoint, but I’m going to feel better about myself. I’m not going to be depressed”, explained Tyson about the reasons for his “comeback”.The rest of the tour was canceled when the bout was negatively welcomed by fans.
